Medium: Mixed media, wall art and wall clock
Description: Westminster Chimes is a steampunk style wall clock art piece that looks chaotic at first, but has a few extra things going on. The clock face is a General Electric Tune-A-Larm from the 1950’s made from Bakelite. The clockworks is retrofitted with a quartz clock. A few of the tricks included in this piece are:
- When the knob on the gears is ‘wound’ (turned), it emits the characteristic ‘clicking’ of winding an old clock.
- The black B.V.D. Electric Trouble Finder dial is from a 1919 device sold to troubleshoot automotive problems. It is still ‘programmable’ (it turns) to troubleshoot even the trickiest electric problem.
- The chimes from the grandfather clock are struck (played) using the magnetically attached brass mallets/hammers.
It’s a fun piece that will start some conversations.
